WDO Discusses Women Muslim Scientists as Part of Its Latest Webinar Series

Cairo, September 20th, 2023 – The Women Development Organization (WDO) held on Wednesday the second episode of its latest webinar Series: “Islam and Cultural Practices”.

The webinar series aims to debunk incorrect cultural practices that are falsely believed to be based on Islam. The webinar’s second episode was on “Women Muslim Scientists” and it was available in English, Arabic, and French to be accessible to attendees from all of WDO’s member states. It was hosted by Dr. Roughaya Ahmed Minih from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania; an Expert at the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Secretary General of the Chinguetti Center for Studies and Media.

Dr. Minih began the discussion by introducing the importance of education and knowledge, and how Islam addressed the issue of women's education. The speaker was keen to highlight the fact that Islam didn’t differentiate between men and women when it came to their right to education and their duty to spread knowledge, using evidence from Quranic verses to solidify her argument.

The speaker then continued the conversation by discussing inspiring examples of some of the most prominent Muslim women scholars in history, and their vital role and impact in their respective fields.

After establishing how Islam supports women’s education, the conversation shifted to tackle how societies can support women’s right to education. The speaker discussed the importance of raising awareness of women’s education and the role of media in highlighting it.

At the end of the session, attendees joined the conversation to share their thoughts and ask their questions to Dr. Minih.

WDO would like to thank Dr. Minih for sharing her rich knowledge, and the attendees for participating in the webinar series' second episode. It would also like to invite everyone to attend the next webinar next Tuesday, September 26th. Check out WDO’s website and social media to know more details about the series.
